Understanding your fertility

This section helps patients recognise when to seek help and reassures them about the natural variations in conception

Fertility challenges are common and not a reflection of personal failure.

What you need to know

When to seek care

  • Under 35: if trying for 12 months without success.

  • Over 35: after 6 months.

  • Sooner if you have irregular cycles, known conditions (endometriosis, PCOS), history of pelvic surgery, or concerns about sperm health.

Early Steps

Lifestyle, nutrition, preconception health checks (folic acid, vitamin D, weight, alcohol, smoking).

Preconception Care

Small changes can make a meaningful difference:

  • Balanced diet rich in fresh fruit, vegetables, protein, and wholegrains.

  • Regular exercise to support healthy weight and reduce stress.

  • Folic acid and vitamin D supplements.

  • Avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol.

  • Managing stress, sleep, and emotional wellbeing.

Emotional Wellbeing

  • Fertility challenges are emotionally demanding. Feelings of frustration, guilt, or isolation are common but not a reflection of personal failure.

  • Support from your partner, friends, or a counsellor can be invaluable.

  • At REN Fertility, we consider emotional wellbeing part of fertility care, not an optional extra.
